Esther Ofarim in Israel Festival 1991 singing Rachel's poem "Zemer Nuge" composed by Shmulik Kraus.
This was the song that Rona dedicated to Ilan Ramno when he was out there floating in the space.....and he never made it back.
With Cape Canaveral as a neighbor, I have watched every launch. We even marched in the streets with joy, celebrating Alan Shepherd. Remember him? I watched in horror on my own front lawn as the space shuttle Challenger exploded, separating into two parts, and falling from the sky in a giant upsilon formation. But my proudest moment was when Ilan Ramon joined the team. I took it personally, feeling that he was a family member somehow. Finally, an Israeli on the team! And I remember the profound grief when the Columbia fell apart upon reentry. I remember crying when they found his shoulder patch, an Israeli flag, in the debris. I wondered, how could one piece of fabric survive an explosive inferno that destroyed everything else? It became to me symbolic of the nation of Israel, and of the Jewish people as a whole, surviving against all odds.
