US President Barack Hussein Obama II will deliver another reconciliation speech to the Muslim world in Egypt next month. White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters on Friday that the speech would be delivered in Egypt on June 4 but did not say whether it would be in the Egyptian capital Cairo, nor would he confirm that he had even received an invitation from Egypt. Insiders speculate that Obama would like to speak in front of the Giza pyramids, so that he can speak in a venue of sufficient grandeur. Obama's Egypt trip fulfills (again) a promise he made during his presidential campaign to give a major address to Muslims from a Muslim city during his first few months in office.
While Egypt has been a key partner for Washington in decades of efforts to secure Middle East peace, "human rights groups" like Amnesty Internation criticized the choice because of the country's poor human rights record. Relations with President Hosni Mubarak have been strained over his resentment of Washington's rapprochement with Tehran. But apparently searches for a Muslim country with a better human rights record proved unsuccessful. "It is a country that in many ways represents the heart of the Arab world," Gibbs said vaguely, in response to comments. "The scope of the speech, the desire for the president to speak (to the Muslim world), is bigger than where the speech was going to be given or who's the leadership of the country where the speech is going to be given," he said.
Obama has made many efforts to reach out to the Arab and Muslim world since taking office. During his inauguration speech he said that the US seeks "a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect" and that the US is willing to "extend a hand if (the Muslim world is) willing to unclench your fist." Obama chose an Arab station, Al Arabiya, to give his first formal TV interview. His first official call to a foreign leader was to Palestinian Authority constable Mahmoud Abbas. He also called for peace and dialogue with Islam in a speech to Turkey's parliament on his first presidential visit to the Muslim world in April. But apparently Istanbul didn't count as a Muslim-reconciliation speech.
Perhaps the true significance can be found in the date: June 4th is recognized as the day before the anniversary of Israel's Six Day War victory in 1967, the day before Israel wiped out the Egyptian air force at once on the morning of the 5th. With his embrace of the Arab Peace Plan, Obama is signaling that Israel will be forced back to the June 4 lines, including his determination to wrest the Old City of Jerusalem from Israeli control. That's why Obama is not pairing a trip to Egypt with what otherwise would be a natural complement: an address to the Israeli Knesset.
On June 6, Obama will celebrate the anniversary of the invasion of Normandy in 1944.
In between, Obama will go to the German city of Dresden and the Buchenwald concentration camp, Gibbs said, apparently trying to equate German suffering and German genocide.
