Israel Insider BBC: Israel link to "hijacked" Russian ship

Israel was linked to the interception of the missing cargo ship Arctic Sea last month, a senior figure close to Israeli intelligence has told the BBC. Israel had informed Moscow that it knew the ship was secretly carrying a Russian air defence system for Iran, although Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has dismissed as "speculation" reports that sophisticated S-300 missiles -- a source of dispute between Jerusalem and Russia - were on board the ship. He promised a "traContinue

Israel Insider Sources: Netanyahu secretly briefed Putin about Iran plans

It turns out that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wasn't visiting a security installation at all when he disappeared for 10 hours last week. He was making a mysterious visit to Moscow, reportedly to meeting with Russian Premier Putin. Kommersant newspaper quoted "experts" as saying they believe a visit of this kind could have stemmed from urgent circumstances such as "Israeli plans to attack Iran". Israel Insider Israeli Arab girl, 16, killed after she shot at border policeman in Negev

At 2 p.m. Saturday, Basma Awad al-Nabari, a 16-year-old high school student from the village of Houra, arrived at the Border Police base near the Shoket Junction between Beersehba and Arad armed with a gun, then opened fire at tContinue

Israel Insider Outgoing Olmert brags about IDF reach, hinting at Sudan op

In one of his last speeches as Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert boasted of the long arm of the Israel Defense Forces, all but confirming news reports of Israeli air strikes on Iran-sourced weapons convoys in Sudan during Operation Cast Lead in January. Sudani and US sources also confirmed the strikes, which were first reported by CBS. "We operate everywhere where we can hit terror infrastructure - in close places, in places further away, everywhere where we can hit terror infraContinue

Israel Insider Israeli Intelligence Chief: Iran passed nuclear threshhold

In a chilling indication that Iran's arms program is advancing steadily, Israel acknowledged for the first time that Teheran had mastered the technology to make a nuclear bomb on the same day that the Iranians announced they had successfully tested a new air-to-surface missile. Iran has "crossed the technological threshold," and its attainment of nuclear military capability is now a matter of "incorporating the goal of producing an atomic bomb into its strategy," OC MilitaContinue

Israel Insider Chairman of Joint Chiefs: Iran has material to make a nuke

The top U.S. military official said Sunday that Iran has sufficient fissile material for a nuclear weapon, declaring it would be a “very, very bad outcome” should Tehran move forward with a bomb.

Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, offered the assessment when questioned in a broadcast interview about a recent report by the U.N. nuclear watchdog on the state of Iran’s uranium enrichment program, which can create nuclear fuel and may be sufficientl

Israel Insider IDF: Israel faces risk of destruction

It's official. Israel’s military leadership believes that the Jewish state faces an imminent existential threat from Iran. Confronting that threat has become the army's primary focus for 2009. No-nonsense Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi offered that bleak assessment as he presented the IDF’s annual workplan to Defense Minister Ehud Barak.

According to Ynetnews, this is “the first time in years” that the IDF has cited an "existential threat." The danger posed by Iran, “c

Israel Insider Israel agrees to release the worst terrorists -- to exile

The Israeli government, in an effort to secure the release of captured IDF soldier Corporal Gilad Shalit, is reportedly willing to release Palestinian terrorists convicted of the most horrific attacks, as long as they remain in Lebanon or Syria, not in areas under the control of Hamas nor of the Palestinian Authority.

This face-saving condition, however, may prove to be a deal-breaker if Israel insists on it, since the Palestinian insist that these "heroes" must be a

Israel Insider Pentagon: Iranian space launch "cause for global concern"

Iran's first successful launch into orbit of a domestically-produced satellite is "cause for concern not just here in the United States but in Europe, throughout the Middle East and I believe throughout the greater world," Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell said Tuesday. The Iranian capability poses "a real threat and it is a growing threat."

US State Department spokesman Robert Wood said the US was "gravely" concerned over the launch.

Israel Insider UN admits that IDF did not in fact hit UNRWA school

The United Nations now says that an IDF mortar strike that killed 43 people on January 6 did not hit a United Nations Relief and Works Agency school. It may well be that most if not all of the people were not killed by an IDF attack at all.

The UN was pressured to set the record straight after investigations showed that the school had not been targeted. Maxwell Gaylord, the UN humanitarian coordinator in Jerusalem, admitted Monday that the IDF mortar shells fell in t

The IDF does not plan to bring disciplinary charges against a battalion commander from the Golani Brigade who told his soldiers that they needed to do everything possible to prevent being kidnapped during the recent operation in Gaza including blowing themselves up with a grenade.

Israel Insider Report: Hamas may have murdered children of Gaza doctor

Medical evidence indicates that the shrapnel that hit a member of the family of Gaza gynecologist Ezzaldeen Abulaish came from a terrorist weapon, not the military-grade ordnance used by the Israel Defence Forces.

Abulaish lost three children and a niece in an explosion that he ascribed to an Israeli tank shell.

Channel 1 Israeli government television reported Sunday night that medical imagery taken at Barzilay Hospital, where his wounded niece was taken, i

Israel Insider Hamas, Jihad declare ceasefire, demand open crossings, IDF pullout

Hamas and Islamic Jihad terror groups declared a ceasefire in Gaza but at the same time demanded that the IDF be out of the strip and crossing points opened within one week.

Meanwhile, rockets and mortars continue to fall on Israel. One woman was lightly injured, and several suffered from shock. One of the rockets damaged a chicken coop, killing 2000 to 3000 chickens and barely missing workers in the henhouse. 13 rockets and four mortars were fired at Israel before 3p

Israel Insider Analysis: Israeli government signs away IDF gains, prepares to unilaterally flee from Gaza

The Olmert government has signed a memorandum of understanding with the US that would commit the Israel to withdraw from the Gaza within days and also to open crossing points between Israel and the Strip.

After 21 days of fighting, it was an almost incomprehensible capitulation, throwing away significant military accomplishments and rewarding the Hamas leadership with all of its demands and the ability to claim that it had driven Israel away and withstood all that the

Visiting UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said that Defense Minister Ehud Barak told him that the shelling of the UNRWA building that caused it to burn to the ground was a "grave mistake" but the Israeli army, and even other defense officials, disagree.

Gunshots and an anti-tank missile had been fired at IDF troops near the UN compound. They returned fire with artillery shells at the location of the gunmen, causing damage to the building, and igniting flammables insi

Israel Insider NY Times: Bush rejected Israeli requests for bunker-busters, Iraq flyover rights

President Bush deflected a secret request by Israel last year for specialized bunker-busting bombs it wanted for an attack on Iran’s main nuclear complex and told the Israelis that he had authorized new covert action intended to sabotage Iran’s suspected effort to develop nuclear weapons, according to senior American and foreign officials.

White House officials never conclusively determined whether Israel had decided to go ahead with the strike before the United State

Israel Insider Hamas folding in clashes with IDF but leadership is hiding behind kids

There are signs that Hamas is falling apart as a fighting force after being soundly thrashed by the Israel Defence Forces in the first 15 days of the war. But that may not be enough, as the international community seems intent on coming to the terror group's rescue. On Saturday, the IDF killed Hamas' rocket chief in the Gaza City area, Amir Mansi. The senior officer said that before his death Mansi clashed with his subordinates, who refused to come out of their hideouts. TContinue
