Israel's Central Elections Committee (CEC) yesterday banned two Arab parties -- United Arab List-Ta'al and Balad -- from running in next month's parliamentary elections amid accusations of racism from Arab MKs. Both parties intend to challenge the decision in the Supreme Court.

Caretaker Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Sunday that the IDF was nearing the objectives it set for Operation Cast Lead. Speaking at the start of the weekly cabinet meeting, Olmert warned that what had been achieved thus far in an "unprecedented effort" must not be lost at the last moment.

Israel's three largest parties have suspend their election campaigns following the launch of the Gaza operation Saturday.
Defense Minister Ehud Barak said he is will no longer be involved in the Labor Party's election campaign. A spokesman said "The situation in the south requires the defense minister to focus his entire attention on defense activity, and he is detaching himself from the campaign until further notice."
